A 3D-printed nuclear reactor core prototype being developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a step toward reaching the goal of creating an advanced, full-sized, 3D-printed reactor by 2023 at the lab.

That plan is part of the ORNL’s Transformational Challenge Reactor demonstration program, which will explore solutions to the high costs and lengthy deployment timelines that threaten the future of nuclear energy, according to ORNL. The reactor core prototype was examined in a May 11 article by New Atlas, a website that covers advances in technology and science, among other disciplines.
