The American Nuclear Society monitors Russian takeover of Ukrainian nuclear plant
Statement from American Nuclear Society President Steven Nesbit and Executive Director and CEO Craig Piercy:
"Russian military forces have taken control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine. We are monitoring the situation as is the International Atomic Energy Agency. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has offered to meet with the parties to ensure a framework for the continued safe operation of the plant. We encourage both parties to work with the IAEA and we support the IAEA’s calls for an immediate halt of violence around Ukraine's nuclear power plants.
As verified by the IAEA, the safety systems of the plant’s six reactors have not been affected by the attack and there has been no release of radioactive material. Radiation monitoring systems at the site are fully functional. IAEA confirmed that the reported fire occurred at an administrative training building and has been extinguished.
We applaud the dedication of the plant operators and our Ukrainian colleagues who continue to perform their duties under extremely challenging circumstances. We deplore the reported loss of life that resulted from the attack."
