What it’s about: The availability of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) may prove pivotal to the deployment of numerous advanced nuclear projects in this decade and beyond. A majority of domestic advanced reactor projects rely on HALEU fuel, and the recent creation of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Nuclear Fuel Availability Program highlights congressional understanding of the need for more action in this area.
The event will be moderated by John Starkey, ANS's director of public policy. "Recent events highlight why nuclear power is so important for both its zero carbon footprint and its ability to provide reliable power for our country," Starkey said. "DOE is currently examining how best to start a program to support HALEU availability for our country's advanced reactor needs. During Friday's webinar, we'll look to examine the challenges and opportunities HALEU faces in the years ahead."
The question remains how best to frame existing efforts and to determine what additional efforts might be needed to secure the HALEU needed for the future. The Department of Energy recently released a request for information related to the Advanced Nuclear Fuel Availability program. Read ANS's response.
