La Grange Park, Ill. — The American Nuclear Society (ANS) welcomes the Senate’s confirmation of Dr. Kathryn Huff to be the Assistant Secretary of Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy (NE).

“On behalf of over 10,000 professionals in the fields of nuclear science and technology, the American Nuclear Society congratulates Dr. Huff on being confirmed by the Senate to be the DOE’s nuclear energy secretary,” said ANS President Steven Nesbit and Executive Director and CEO Craig Piercy in a joint statement.

“Building upon her extensive work in academia and in government, Dr. Huff has already proven herself a leader and advocate for clean nuclear energy while serving as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary and Acting Assistant Secretary in the Office of Nuclear Energy,” Nesbit and Piercy said.

“We look forward to Dr. Huff’s tenure as ‘NE-1’ and are confident that Dr. Huff will continue to advance nuclear energy’s critical role in securing affordable, reliable and emissions-free energy for Americans and the world,” Nesbit and Piercy said.

In a March 12 letter to the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Nesbit and Piercy vouched for Dr. Huff's credentials and experience.

"Dr. Huff is a highly respected and widely known member of the American nuclear community," Nesbit and Piercy wrote in the letter. "Dr. Huff’s recent experience at the U.S. Department of Energy as well as her research on modeling and simulation of advanced nuclear reactors and fuel cycles make her highly qualified for this position."

Dr. Huff holds a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a B.A. in Physics from the University of Chicago.

The March 12 letter noted that Dr. Huff has been an active member of the premier scientific and professional organization for nuclear engineers and technologists, including service as chair of the ANS Fuel Cycle and Waste Management Division and the ANS Nuclear Nonproliferation Policy Division. Dr. Huff is also the recipient of both the ANS Young Member Excellence and Mary Jane Oestmann Professional Women's Achievement awards.
