Purdue–Duke Energy launch lecture series on advanced nuclear technology

A new lecture series launched by Purdue University and Duke Energy is designed to educate the public about small modular reactors and other advances in nuclear energy. The series stems from an ongoing comprehensive joint study by Purdue and Duke, announced in April, which is investigating the feasibility of using SMRs to meet the campus’s energy needs.

The lectures were announced last week at the first meeting of the joint study’s executive advisory committee, which comprises experts from both the public and private sectors. The intention is that the study and associated lectures will advance both the university’s energy goals and the public’s understanding of nuclear energy.

The committee agreed to a monthly lecture, led by Purdue. Topics will include nuclear technology, sustainability, safety, economics, and regulation. Purdue’s president-elect and the committee chair, Mung Chiang, commented on the lecture series, saying, “As part of our study with Duke Energy, we are eager to provide a platform for education, engagement, and dialogue among the public as well as our faculty, staff and students.”

The first in the series: The lectures will commence on August 30 at 4:00 p.m. (EDT) with Arden Bement as the first speaker. Bement, a member of the executive advisory committee, is the David A. Ross distinguished professor emeritus of nuclear engineering at Purdue. All lectures in the series can be attended either in-person at Eliza Fowler Hall in the student center on Purdue’s campus, or virtually.
