The 2023 Nuclear Innovation Bootcamp (NIB2023) will take place at the Tokyo Institute of Technology from July 29 to August 12, 2023. The event, cohosted by Tokyo Tech’s Nuclear Innovator Cultivation Program and the Washington, D.C.-based Nuclear Innovation Alliance, will offer training for students and early- career professionals in skills essential to innovation in nuclear energy via expert-led sessions, team-building exercises, and a group project design and competition.

Application: The application window for attending NIB2023 will be open from January 1 to February 26, 2023. Applicants, who can be in any field, must be undergraduate students who are currently in at least their third year, graduate students (including Ph.D. students), or early- career professionals who have been working fewer than five years.

Between 25 and 30 people will be selected for participation. Applications will be evaluated based on the individual’s demonstrated interest in clean energy innovation and/or business development. Successful applicants will be notified of their selection by email at the end of March 2023. Additional directions and requirements for applying are provided at the above application link.

Curriculum: The curriculum of the bootcamp will focus on four key areas: learning strategies for innovation, developing approaches to venture building, examining the feasibility of initiatives, and critiquing projects from a multidisciplinary perspective. This curriculum is designed to provide in-depth knowledge on a number of issues related to innovation, including the following:

  • Venture fundamentals
  • Methods for idea generation and critique
  • Cross-cutting needs in nuclear energy systems
  • Product development and marketing
  • Generation IV designs
  • Community and stakeholder engagement
  • Venture and institutional financing
  • Climate change and environmental justice
  • Challenges and opportunities for nuclear energy
  • Licensing, legal issues, and government/nongovernmental organization support

Costs: Participants’ costs for lodging and meals will be covered by the bootcamp. Although travel expenses will not typically be covered, scholarships are available in cases of financial need. Scholarships are also available to cover the $100 fee that is required to secure a seat and finalize enrollment.
