ANS releases two new books
The American Nuclear Society has added two new books to its publication catalog: Robert Busch’s Nuclear Criticality Safety: Evaluations, Calculations, and Experiences and Raymond J. Juzaitis’s Redemption of Prometheus: Creating a Sustainable Nuclear Enterprise for the 21st Century. The titles were released for purchase in late August and early September, respectively.
Nuclear Criticality Safety describes fundamentals, applications, and experiences in nuclear criticality safety (NCS) with a focus on criticality accidents and lessons learned. The book complements the seminal 1985 text Nuclear Criticality Safety: Theory and Practice by Ronald Knief, also published by ANS. Busch’s volume caters to both students at the undergrad and graduate levels as well as nuclear professionals just entering the criticality safety field. For those with experience in NCS, the book can be a valuable refresher and a means to update their understanding of current methods. Up-to-date material on computer-enabled modeling and computation is included.
Redemption of Prometheus presents a comprehensive narrative of the development of both civilian and military aspects of the nuclear enterprise and addresses legacy issues that threaten its sustainability. Juzaitis emphasizes the importance of supporting global human development and analyzes the sustainability of the domestic nuclear industry in the face of global climate change and the risk of nuclear conflict. Proposed initiatives include integrated and optimized nuclear systems, used fuel recycling, advanced fast-spectrum reactors, international nuclear fuel banks, and steps toward a world free of nuclear weapons.
About the authors
Robert Busch, P.E., has been involved in the NCS community since 1975, when, as a graduate student, he helped organize the first University of New Mexico NCS Short Course. He was made director of those courses in 1989 and grew the program in 1996 with an NCS Short Course series in the United Kingdom. Busch’s career at UNM spans 35 years; he is currently principal lecturer emeritus in the Department of Nuclear Engineering. In 2001, he was recognized by his peers in the ANS Nuclear Criticality Safety Division with the Distinguished Service Award. Busch earned his B.S. in physics from Harvey Mudd College and his M.S. and Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of New Mexico.
Raymond Juzaitis is a nuclear engineer with more than 40 years of experience in nuclear nonproliferation, intelligence, counterterrorism, homeland security, and related research and development programs. His broad technical career has included nuclear weapons design, development, testing, and evaluation with senior advisory assignments at the Pentagon and the Department of Energy. Juzaitis’s continuing research and consulting efforts involve technology and policy elements of proliferation risk, focusing on nuclear weapons latency inherent in global nuclear energy capabilities and infrastructure, and the sustainable evolution of civilian and defense nuclear infrastructures. He has also worked for the University of California and has served as department head of the Texas A&M Nuclear Engineering Department. Juzaitis holds a B.S.E. from Princeton University and an M.E. and Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Virginia.
