Join ANS for a webinar on exploring background radiation

The American Nuclear Society, in partnership with the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy, is hosting its next Educator Training event, “K-12 Classroom Investigations: Exploring Background Radiation,” this Thursday, May 16, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. (EDT).

Register now. The event is complimentary and open to all.

What it’s about: The presentation is designed for K-12 educators, providing information on how nuclear science experiments can be performed in the classroom. For example, an engaging background radiation lab demonstration can be performed with a vacuum cleaner and a coffee filter. An experiment will be presented live from the Penn State Radiation Science and Engineering Center, offering an informative lesson on background radiation.

In addition to enjoying the presentation, participants will have the opportunity to enter a drawing to win a vintage Geiger-Müller counter.

Your hosts: The presenter for the event is Candace Davison, a STEM educator with more than 30 years of experience. She was recently the assistant director for education and outreach and the coordinator of the Gamma Irradiation Facility at the Penn State Radiation Science and Engineering Center. She is also the first woman to be licensed as a senior reactor operator on Penn State’s TRIGA Mark III Reactor.

The moderator is Mary Lou Dunzik-Gougar, associate dean of the College of Science and Engineering and a professor of nuclear engineering at Idaho State University. She is also a senior reactor operator at ISU’s Aerojet-General Nucleonics (AGN-201) nuclear reactor and a recent ANS past president (2020–2021).

Davison and Dunzik-Gougar will also host a Q&A session after the presentation. Educators are encouraged to submit their students’ questions in advance to webinars@ans.org.
