NRC names four MSI recipients of scholarships and fellowships

The grants come from the NRC’s MSI Grants Program, which bestows financial awards to historically black colleges and universities, tribal colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, and Asian American and Pacific Islander–serving institutions, among others. The grants may be used for educational programs, research activities, other projects, or symposiums and training relevant to nuclear safety, security, environmental protection, or other fields critical to the NRC mission.

Five awards for four MSIs: The four MSIs that have received the NRC awards are as follows.

• The University of Nevada–Las Vegas has received two fellowship grants each worth $400,000. One grant funds a radiochemistry fellowship for nuclear workforce development, and the other funds a diverse nuclear workforce fellowship program in mechanical and nuclear engineering.
• North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has received a fellowship grant worth $600,000. The grant will be used for nuclear engineering research and education as part of the university’s mechanical engineering concentration. Funding will focus on the engineering areas of cooling, safety, radiation shielding, protection, and reliability.
• The University of Houston–Downtown has received a scholarship grant worth $188,000. The grant is for support in the areas of nuclear-related radiochemistry, engineering technology, chemical sensors, and cybersecurity for minority STEM programs.
• South Carolina State University has received a scholarship grant worth $200,000. This grant is to be used to support the university’s nuclear engineering program.
