The American Nuclear Society is hosting an online panel discussion exploring the future of nuclear energy in Africa. The event, “Unlocking Africa’s Potential with Nuclear Energy,” will be held on Friday, May 17, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. (EDT).

What it’s about: The discussion will feature three panelists who are among the nuclear industry’s leaders working to advance nuclear power to meet the increasing energy demands of Africa and its rapidly growing population. The panelists will share their insights regarding how nuclear power can help to meet energy security goals and climate goals in Africa.

The session is moderated by Lisa Marshall, current ANS vice president/president-elect. Marshall is an assistant extension professor and the director of outreach, retention, and engagement in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University.

The panelists include

  • Aleshia Duncan, deputy assistant secretary for international cooperation in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy.
  • Rebecca Tadesse, head of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency’s Division of Radioactive Waste Management and Decommissioning.
  • Seth Kofi Debrah, principal research scientific officer for the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission and an associate professor in the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, University of Ghana.

Your turn: Participants are encouraged to submit questions for the panelists in advance of the event via email.
